Business-related Issues

The Faroese Board of Appeal handles complaints related to business issues. The jurisdiction is broad and covers a wide range of issues, such as decisions made by the Faroese Vehicle Administration regarding driving licences, decisions by the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority regarding the import of dangerous animals, and decisions by the Faroese Environment Agency concerning firearm licences – just to mention a few examples.

In business-related issues, the Faroese Board of Appeal handles complaints about:

  • Decisions by the Faroese Safety Authority pursuant to the Occupational Safety Act
  • Decisions by the Faroese Environment Agency pursuant to the Electricity Production, Transmission, and Supply Act
  • Decisions by the Telecommunications Authority pursuant to the Telecommunications Act
  • Decisions by the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority pursuant to the Food Act, the Aquaculture License Act, the Animal Diseases Act, the Veterinary Practices Act, and the Act on the Import and Keeping of Dangerous Animals
  • Decisions by the Competition Authority pursuant to the Competition Act

  • Decisions by the Insurance Supervisory Authority pursuant to the Insurance Business Act
  • Decisions by the Faroese Environment Agency pursuant to the Regulation on Firearm Licences
  • In addition, the Faroese Board of Appeal handles complaints pursuant to the Act on the Employer’s Obligation to Inform Employees of the Terms of Employment

Relevant Considerations

As a general rule, complaints to the Board must be submitted in writing and must be reasoned. It is important that the contested decision and other relevant documents are submitted to the Board. It should also be noted that the deadline for submitting complaints is normally 4 weeks from the date the decision is received. The deadline may be extended in special circumstances if valid reasons are provided.

It is free of charge to file a complaint with the Faroese Board of Appeal. The goal is always to process the complaint as quickly as possible, but in general, it may take around 5 months before the case is fully clarified and ready for decision. As a complainant, you will be kept informed of the progress of your case.

The Board may seek advice from an expert during the preparation of a case. In addition, the Board may include one or more experts in its composition.
